Long Live Ephedra (viridis)!

[Dividing Line Image]

On February 6, 2004 the FDA banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedra alkaloids. The ban on ephedra specifically permits*:

  1. dietary supplements void of ephedrine alkaloids - the ephedra viridis variety is known to not contain any ephedrine alkaloids
  2. Oriental medicine containing ephedrine alkaloids - the intent was to ban ephedra supplements used for weight loss, not for other medical uses
  3. products not considered dietary supplements, tea for example - again, not typically used for weight loss

* For the exact wording, see the FDA ban unabridged page, (the first two links under noteworthy points are the most pertinent).
